1. General Information

BetterLocale MarkDown is a macOS application for creating, editing, and managing Markdown documents.

The app processes content primarily locally on your device.
The provider does not operate any servers for storing or processing your documents.

2. Processing of Data

The app does not automatically or systematically process personal data (e.g. no tracking IDs, no usage profiles, no analytics services).

Only content that you enter, import, or create yourself is processed.
This content may contain personal data if you include such information in your documents.

You are responsible for the content of your documents.

3. Data Storage

3.1 Local Storage

Documents, versions, and settings are stored locally in the protected app container on your device.

The provider has no access to these contents.

3.2 Optional iCloud Synchronization

If you enable iCloud synchronization, your documents and related metadata are stored via Apple iCloud and synchronized between your devices.

Processing is carried out in accordance with Apple’s privacy policies.

The provider of this app does not have access to your iCloud content.

4. Recipients of Data

Without using optional features, no data is transferred to third parties.

If iCloud synchronization is enabled, data is transmitted to Apple Inc.

When optional AI features are used, the content you select is transmitted to the AI provider you choose.

5. Optional AI Features

The app offers optional functions for translation, text processing, and analysis via external AI services.

5.1 Type of Data Transmitted

When you use an AI feature, only the following data is transmitted:

• the prompt you entered
• the text content or document sections you explicitly selected

No additional personal data, no additional documents, no background data, no device information, and no system information are transmitted.

Before using an AI service for the first time, you must explicitly consent.

Before each transmission, a dialog is shown explaining:

• which AI provider will be contacted
• which data will be transmitted
• the purpose of the processing
• a link to the provider’s privacy policy

Data is transmitted only after your active confirmation and only through an action initiated by you (for example tapping “Send”).
No automatic background transmission takes place.

Consent can be withdrawn at any time in the settings under “Reset App”.
It will also automatically expire if the API token of an AI provider is deleted.

The app only transmits content explicitly selected by the user.

5.2 Supported Providers

Depending on your selection, data may be transmitted to the following providers:

• OpenAI, L.L.C., USA
• Anthropic PBC (Claude), USA
• Google LLC (Gemini), USA
• Perplexity AI, USA
• xAI Corp. (Grok), USA
• DeepL SE, Cologne, Germany

These providers process transmitted content independently in accordance with their own privacy policies.

Some providers are located outside the European Union, particularly in the United States.
This may result in the transfer of selected content to a third country.

5.3 API Keys

To use AI services, you provide your own API key.

The API key is stored locally on your device and used only for authentication with the selected provider.

The provider of this app has no access to your API key.

5.4 No Server-Side Processing

The app provider does not operate any servers for processing or storing your content.

Communication with AI providers occurs directly from your device.

6. Data Security

The app uses macOS security mechanisms, including:

• App Sandbox
• protected local file storage
• encrypted iCloud transmission

7. Legal Basis

Where personal data is processed, the legal basis is:

• Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of a contract)
• Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest)
• when using external AI services: consent pursuant to Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR

8. Data Retention

Documents are stored as long as you keep them in the app.

You may delete content at any time or disable iCloud synchronization.

When the app is uninstalled, locally stored data is deleted.

9. Your Rights

You have the following rights in particular:

• access (Art. 15 GDPR)
• rectification (Art. 16 GDPR)
• erasure (Art. 17 GDPR)
• restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
• objection (Art. 21 GDPR)
• data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)
