1. What is this app about?

BetterLocale MarkDown is a macOS app for creating, editing, and managing Markdown documents. The app is designed to primarily process content locally on your device. Optionally, synchronization via iCloud can be enabled.

The provider does not operate any servers to store your documents.

2. What data does the app process?

BetterLocale MarkDown does not automatically or systematically process any personal data (e.g., no tracking IDs, no usage profiles, no analytics services).

The app only processes content that you enter, import, or create yourself. This content may contain personal data if you consciously or inadvertently include it in documents (e.g., names, email addresses, contact details).

You are responsible for the content of your documents.
Please do not enter sensitive or confidential data unless necessary.

3. Where is your data stored?

3.1 Local storage

Documents, versions, and settings are stored locally in the protected app container on your device.

The provider has no access to this content.

3.2 Optional iCloud synchronization

If you have enabled iCloud on your device, BetterLocale MarkDown can synchronize your documents via Apple iCloud (CloudKit, private area).

The following applies:
• Synchronization occurs exclusively through your private iCloud account.
• Data is stored in the private iCloud area.
• The provider does not have access to this content.
• Processing is carried out by Apple as an independent controller according to its privacy policy.

Using iCloud depends solely on your system settings.
If you disable iCloud, no cloud synchronization will occur.

4. Are data transmitted to third parties?

Without using optional features, no content is transmitted to third parties.

With iCloud synchronization enabled, data is transmitted to Apple as part of the iCloud services.

No further sharing with third parties takes place.

5. Data security

BetterLocale MarkDown uses macOS security mechanisms, in particular:
• App sandbox
• protected local file storage
• encrypted iCloud transmission (when synchronization is active)

If your device is protected by a password, Touch ID, Face ID, or FileVault, your locally stored data is correspondingly secured.

6. Optional AI features

BetterLocale MarkDown can – depending on version and configuration – offer optional AI features for text processing or assistance.

Use is voluntary and not required for the basic operation of the app.

6.1 What data is transmitted?

If you use an AI feature, only the content necessary for the respective request is transmitted, in particular:
• your instruction (prompt)
• the text you selected

Not transmitted are:
• other unselected documents
• Apple ID information
• payment or license data

You decide which content is sent.
Please do not transmit sensitive or confidential data unless necessary.

6.2 Responsibility of external providers

Processing is carried out by the respective AI provider according to their own privacy policies.

Depending on the provider, processing may take place outside the EU/EEA.

Please inform yourself directly with the respective provider about:
• storage duration
• training usage
• protection mechanisms for third-country transfers

6.3 API keys

If you store an API key:
• it is stored exclusively locally
• storage is encrypted in the Apple Keychain
• the provider has no access to your key

The key can be deleted at any time.
When uninstalling the app, local app data is removed.

7. Legal bases

If personal data is involved, processing is carried out in particular:
• to provide app functions according to Art. 6 para. 1 lit. b GDPR (contract)
• to technically provide a functional app according to Art. 6 para. 1 lit. f GDPR (legitimate interest)
• when using external AI services, depending on configuration, possibly based on your consent according to Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a GDPR

8. Storage duration and deletion

Documents are stored as long as you keep them in the app.

You can:
• delete documents at any time
• disable iCloud synchronization
• remove API keys

When uninstalling the app, locally stored app data is deleted.
iCloud data can additionally be managed via your Apple settings.

9. Your rights

If personal data is involved, you have the following rights under the GDPR in particular:
• Access (Art. 15 GDPR)
• Rectification (Art. 16 GDPR)
• Deletion (Art. 17 GDPR)
• Restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
• Objection (Art. 21 GDPR)
• Data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR).

Since the provider does not operate its own servers for your content, these rights practically relate mainly to:
• locally stored data
• iCloud data (Apple)
• possibly AI providers you use
